Thanks to everyone who attended the book launch, and helping to make it a spectacular event.  My good friends, Karen Galenzoski and Jon Popowich, for whom I dedicated this novel, were in attendance.  You can see Karen below through the stairwell, and Jon, well, he's the person behind the lens of the camera taking all these wonderful pictures.  The painting to the right is the author's interpretation of key themes and events in the novel, set to canvas during a fund raising event; one of many that my generous family and friends host each year.  They inspire me to write.  But as for painting, I will best leave that to the real artist of our gang, Robin Phillips who painted the cover of my second novel, seen at the foot of my artwork.

BOOK LAUNCH FOR DROWNING IN IOWA

Friday, October 30, 2015, Audreys Bookstore, Edmonton, Alberta
7pm.  Please see photographs from the book launch below.

Spending a year in Iowa was meant to revitalize their marriage, but when tragedy strikes their family, Jane Roberts and Aaron Scott come face to face with their own vulnerabilities and questions of midlife. As physicians, they are trained to help others in times of crisis, but nothing could prepare them for losing a child. Now they must learn to rediscover themselves and one another as they embark
on a parallel journey of healing.

Drowning in Iowa is a poignant look at how trauma can shake a family to its very roots. From the rugged shores of Newfoundland to the picturesque lands of the American Midwest, it is a story of heartbreak, fidelity, introspection, and hope.

Drowning in Iowa is Gordon Self's second novel, following the release of The Necessities of Life last year.

A very special thanks to all those who joined me and my family on October 30th at Audreys Bookstore for the launch of Drowning in Iowa.  My very good friend Jon Popowich captured the magic of the evening through his artistic black and white photographs.  I was honoured to have Jon and another good friend and talented artist, Robin Phillips, in attendance with us this evening. It is Robin's watercolour that graces the front cover of the novel.

Last year, I was very privileged to host the book launch of The Necessities of LIfe at Audreys Bookstore.  The press release and photographs of that equally wonderful evening follows below.

Edmonton, Canada—Audreys Books in Edmonton is proud to host the book launch of The Necessities of Life, written by local author Gordon Self, a haunting story of Vancouver’s troubled Downtown Eastside that glows with humanity, dignity and compassion.  Inspired by the author’s work and reflection on social justice issues in health care and community outreach, the story is both inspirational and accessible, as it is provocative.

When Father Bao finds an abandoned newborn, shades of his own past come back to haunt him,  While the police search for the child’s parents, Bao struggles with how to better serve his community, despite detractors within his own parish.  The gritty realities of urban life expose the hidden biases that threaten to tear his congregation and the community apart.

In The Necessities of Life, Gordon Self shows the many faces of abandonment in the lives of the characters, which he believes is the greatest moral issue of our times.  Far from abandoning those in greatest need, Self shows how we each have a burden to bear, and that beyond social differences is a shared humanity that binds us together.

I am so grateful for all those who attended the book launch. The pictures below from my friend Jon Popowich capture the event well. While The Necessities of Life is a tragic story, it is our ability to reach out to others, and to reach for something more, that can create such a joyful experience of shared humanity, as evident on the faces I saw in the bookstore that night.

This picture of my adopted Vietnamese family was taken a few days before in Vancouver, at the "informal" book launch.  It is this family's remarkable courage that gave rise in part to the inspiration of this story.
